Bantrel was retained by Agrium to help debottleneck their existing Plant 1 Ammonia Plant.  The objective of this study was to determine the maximum ammonia production rate with increased operating efficiencies and minimum investment. Bantrel’s involvement was to:

  • Identify bottlenecks
  • Prepare process flow diagrams, including heat and material balances
  • Prepare equipment data sheets for all new and upgraded equipment
  • Review all piping capabilities
  • Prepare equipment layouts and a cost estimate
A complete Design Basis Memorandum was produced so that Agrium could evaluate the project economics at incremental production levels.

Following the DBM, Agrium awarded Bantrel the detailed engineering and procurement services. The scope of these services included:
  • Extending an existing table top compressor foundation to accommodate a 20,000 hp motor and gearbox to replace the existing steam turbine driver
  • Extend the compressor building and install an overhead crane
  • Install a new lube oil cooling system
  • Install three new heat exchangers and a pump turbine driver
  • Run new 13.8 kV power cable and install a new MCC building for the 20,000 hp synchronous motor
  • Replace the reforming furnace tubes and header piping
  • Installation of all necessary piping and instrumentation to complete the debottleneck
