The Rio Tinto Alcan Kitimat Modernization project is located in Kitimat, British Columbia and it increased the smelter’s orginal production capacity by 48 per cent to approximately 420,000 tonnes per year.
The modernized Kitimat smelter is powered exclusively by hydroelectricity from Rio Tinto Alcan’s wholly owned Kemano generating station. Using Rio Tinto Alcan’s AP technology to reduce its overall emissions by nearly 50 per cent, the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in aluminium production in the world (based on International Aluminum Industry 2003 Survey results).
