The Rio Tinto Alcan Kitimat Modernization project is located in Kitimat, British Columbia and it increased the smelter’s orginal production capacity by 48 per cent to approximately 420,000 tonnes per year.

The modernized Kitimat smelter is powered exclusively by hydroelectricity from Rio Tinto Alcan’s wholly owned Kemano generating station. Using Rio Tinto Alcan’s AP technology to reduce its overall emissions by nearly 50 per cent, the lowest greenhouse gas emissions in aluminium production in the world (based on International Aluminum Industry 2003 Survey results).

Bantrel Constructors Co. (BCC) is responsible for site supervision, direct field labour, and supply of temporary equipment and consumables.
 
BCC’s scope includes the structural, mechanical and electrical works for:
  • Pot lines (384 new pots)
  • GTC (Gas Treatment Center)
  • PTA’s and Bridge cranes
  • Carbon area
  • Cathode Sealing
  • Air compression
  • Site supervision, direct field labour, and supply of temporary equipment and consumables for Kitimat aluminium smelter expansion
  • Cladding
  • Site wide electrical installation
  • Mechanical installation in the pot line courtyards as well as the carbon area
The project increased the smelter’s current production capacity by 48 per cent to approximately 420,000 tonnes per year. 

The smelter is powered exclusively by hydroelectricity from Rio Tinto Alcan’s wholly owned Kemano generating station. It utilizes Rio Tinto Alcan’s proprietary AP technology to reduce its overall emissions by nearly 50 per cent. It was designed and constructed as one of the lowest-cost smelters in the world.
