The Horizon project was a proposed oil sands facility that by 2011 was going to produce, extract and upgrade 270,000 BPD of dry bitumen to produce 232,000 BPD of synthetic crude oil.

The new upgrader was to include the following complexes:

  • Primary Upgrading, comprised of two diluent recovery units, a vacuum unit and a primary conversion unit
  • Secondary Upgrading, comprised of five separate Hydrotreating / Hydrocracking units plus hydrogen production
  • Support units, including a sulphur complex
The Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL) Horizon Project was a grassroots bitumen upgrader located northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Bantrel performed the design base memorandum (DBM) for the utilities and offsites (U&O) of the project. This involved utility scoping for a grassroots bitumen upgrader complex including all power distribution, water treating, steam generation and tank farms.

Bantrel also performed the DBM for Stet grading at the Horizon Facility. This required the specification of three grassroots hydrotreaters for a new bitumen upgrader in Fort McMurray:

  • Naphtha Hydrotreater (35.9 KBPSD)
  • Diesel Hydrotreater (53.5 KBPSD)
  • Gas Oil Hydrotreater (44.5 KBPSD)

Following this, Bantrel proceeded to complete the engineering design specification (EDS) stage of the Secondary Upgrading. All three were based on UOP - licensed technologies. Bantrel provided significant support to CNRL in ensuring delivery of the licensor packages and integrating them into comprehensive EDS deliverables packages.

DBM and FEED services for a grassroots bitumen upgrader included:

  • Naphtha Hydrotreater (35.9 KBPSD)
  • Diesel Hydrotreater (53.5 KBPSD)
  • Utilities scoping for all power distribution, water treating, steam generation and tank farms
